How to Prune Christmas Lights

For your consideration I offer the following advice regarding pre-lit Christmas trees:

Never buy a pre-lit tree. While it may seem like a great way to reduce the amount of holiday vulgarities spewing forth during your late night bout of tree trimming you need to consider the 2nd and third year of ownership (should the lights actually survive past year one).

If you think your stress level is high when you can simply throw out the broken lights and restring with new lights as you do with a non pre-lit tree, imagine your blood pressure when you realize that the broken lights on your very expensive pre-lit are attached with hundreds of purposefully hidden clips!

At this point you not only get to purchase new lights you also get to enjoy hours of fun finding and removing all the clips holding the #*!^&$#! lights on your wonderful pre-lit tree.

How do I know this? Experience.

For those of you who bought the hype and own a pre-lit tree I offer the following tip. Don't bother trying to remove the entire string of broken lights. Simply go to your tool box, grab the large set of wire cutters and simply "Prune" the bulb sockets and leave the wires. Hey, they're green AND they help fill out the tree - at least that's what I tell myself so I don't feel so bad. Results of a recent pruning session are shown at left.

P.S. Unplug the lights before pruning.
